Nutrition and the Patient with Chronic Kidney Disease (1 credit hours)
In the presence of chronic kidney disease, a combination of diet, medications, and dialysis treatments is needed to support healthy kidney function and to maintain the overall health status of the patient.

Dietary prescriptions vary by patient based on numerous variables, including the extent of renal disease, the current nutritional state of the patient, and the applied renal therapy.

This module will review basic dietary requirements for patients with chronic kidney disease and will explore the nutritional impact of three dialysis therapies and transplant.

Planners, content specialists and feedback personnel have declared that there is no conflict of interest in the preparation and content of this module. There is no commercial support for or endorsement of products in this module.

Kathy Lueker, BSN, RN, CNN

Kathy Lueker received her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the University of Phoenix. She has been a certified nephrology nurse since 1989 and has worked with pre-dialysis, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients. She has spent most of her career educating patients, families, and healthcare providers in the many facets of kidney disease and its treatment. Kathy is currently the facility administrator of Davita’s Marion Dialysis unit in Marion, Illinois.

After completing this module, learners will be able to:
  • Discuss the need for a dietary prescription.
  • Explain the role of dietary nutrients in maintaining health and well being.
  • List the major nutrients associated with the renal diet.
  • Discuss the recommended nutrient intake for each treatment modality.
  • Describe the role of the renal dietician.
  • Identify at least three evaluations performed by the dietician as part of the nutritional assessment.
  • Describe the role of the multidisciplinary team in the nutrition of a dialysis patient.
